AVIAN Joins Counter-UAS Tactics and Training Venture, redUAS

LEXINGTON PARK, Md. – Around the world, unmanned systems, better known as drones, continue to rise in popularity at incredible rates. Drones the size of cell phones now have the power to capture hi-quality photo and video, but their capabilities don’t stop there.

Recently, terrorists have found ways to modify and weaponize recreational drones creating an urgent need for trained counter-UAS professionals.

That’s where redUAS comes in. A joint venture between AVIAN LLC and five veteran U.S. armed forces-owned and first responder-owned companies, redUAS has created a strategic course-load for producing personalized counter-UAS tactics.

“To properly counter this new threat, we need to understand the attack techniques being used, and develop counter tactics, techniques and procedures to defeat them,” said Kevin Switick, an-owner and president of AVIAN. “If an organization or agency’s plan is to simply buy counter-UAS technology, then wait for a drone to appear and ‘shoot it down,’ they are going to be too late. These drones are too fast, too nimble and too quiet, counter drone technology alone is ineffective without tactics and training.”

redUAS has developed six courses designed to walk customers through the creation of their counter-UAS tactics in a series of logical steps that starts with understanding and training the customer’s workforce on the threat, selecting the appropriate technology for their team, drafting their own tactics manual and ultimately, conducting field training exercises.

“redUAS is determined to provide our first-responders and defense agencies basic counter-UAS awareness training. The threat is real, the time for action is now,” Switick said. “From protecting the next Super Bowl, to protecting your privacy, redUAS is ready to train professionals on the ins and outs of tactical defense.”

For the past 11 years, AVIAN has pioneered unmanned systems projects for the United States Navy, Providing test support for small, medium and large unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) for Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), the unmanned underwater vehicle mine countermeasures system and the remote multi-mission vehicle mine countermeasures system for Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA).

Innovators in the unmanned systems industry, AVIAN has achieved the first helicopter unmanned air vehicle landing onboard a Littoral Combat Ship, the first dual air vehicle flight from a single control station and the first laser guided rocket shot from a helicopter unmanned air vehicle.

AVIAN tests and operates the MQ-4C Triton, the MQ-8B Fire Scout and the RQ-21 Blackjack UAS systems at NAVAIR.
